Press Release #6

The “Capacity building to the Mongolian vegetable tanned yak leather on bio-leather and bio-leather products” project – Sustainable Yak Leather (SYL) project – is funded by the EU, within the framework of the SWITCH-Asia Grants Programme. The Mongolian Association of Leather Industry (MALI), in collaboration with other partners of the SYL project, in organising a five-day training programme for tannery staff of the Vegetable Tanned Yak Leather Cluster. Participants will be selected among the following categories: buyers (and/or agents), beamhouse supervisors and quality assurance technicians.

This training activity, predominantly practical with accompanying theory, will aim to demonstrate the improvements (to pre-slaughter and peri-slaughter operations) to be adopted by producers supplying raw materials to the tanneries in the future, including, for example, improved fleshing. Remedial measures will be presented for introduction, such as the improved utilisation of tannery fleshings. The adoption of these improvements will help reducing the environmental impact of the Mongolian vegetable tanned yak leather Cluster by decreasing the amount of waste generated (less spoiled hides, utilisation of waste for by-product production)
